Song No #450 Thánh Ca Dân Chúa, English Missal
|Lời bài hát:||Lời dịch: Chúa Ở Gần Bên Con|
O Lord, I know you are near,
standing always at my side.
You guard me from the foe,
and you lead me in ways everlasting.1.
Lord, you have searched my heart,
and you know when I sit and when I stand.
Your hand is upon me
protecting me from death,
keeping me from harm.

For Dan Schutte, “You Are Near” is his most treasured and favourite song because it touches such a deep part of his faith. Over the years, many others have told him that this song is their favourite, also. Others have shared that this song has brought them great comfort and hope during some of the most challenging and darkest times of their lives.
Dan composed the hymn “You Are Near” over forty years ago while on a retreat. Following his retreat director’s suggestion, he focused his prayer on the text of Psalm 139. As soon as he read it, he was so moved by the text and it has been his favourite psalm ever since. He finished composing the song few weeks after the retreat.
Dan first composed “You Are Near” on guitar and even today he still plays it on guitar for Mass. He suggests that guitar’s simplicity is the best way to approach playing and singing the piece because it fits with the quiet and contemplative character of the song. Also, strumming the song or playing fast is not in keeping with his original vision. For him, the piece needs to be played and sung in a way that captures that quiet and holy place in our souls where we meet God alone.
